Rossi’s new command, consisting of the remains of the two companies was now a mixture of four national detachments - French and Czechs from Rossi’s Falcon, plus the Ukrainians and Egyptians from Belenko’s Jaguar. There had been about a hundred Rangers plus their officers in each detachment, over four hundred altogether, but now the combined company had fewer than 140 able-bodied troopers. The Egyptian component of the Belenko’s company had suffered the worst of any of the detachments in the struggle to hold the aliens from crossing the rivers and heading north. Captain Hussein had been killed very early in the battle and the Egyptian detachment’s stubborn officers, all male, had been slow in heeding Belenko’s orders to withdraw from their exposed positions. They’d paid a heavy price for their reluctance to follow the orders of their female senior-in-command.

Rossi and Belenko checked in with the remaining officers and senior NCOs of each detachment and they were assured there were no pressing problems. Most of the troopers were still resting in the makeshift barracks in the base gymnasium. Rossi let them know that their troopers would be moving into the barracks Alpha Company was vacating that afternoon. She advised them to find Alpha’s senior NCOs and get the berthing assignments for their people settled ahead of time.

Satisfied that everything was under control at the barracks, Rossi turned to researching Oksana’s claim about Cassidy and Pickford being there under false identities. With Belenko’s guidance she quickly located the information about the Navy Commander and the Marine Gunnery Sergeant and compared it to what was in the colony’s limited news archive of the events back on Earth some four and a half years ago. Once she was able to compare more recent photographs of the two to the ones in the news accounts she too had no doubts that they were the same people, Paul O’Brien and Susan Bennett.

Then she did a search in the archives for the name Naomi MacCaffrey and sure enough her name came up in news accounts of the rescue of a group of UN soldiers who had been taken captive by mercenaries working for the terrorist Hassan Gul. The news report stated that Canadian Captain Naomi MacCaffrey had been about to be executed by the band of Arab and African mercenaries but was rescued at the last moment by an American Marine sergeant who had killed both of the brothers. Bennett was awarded the Medal of Honor and medals from the Canadian and Norwegian governments.

No wonder MacCaffrey was upset when Jing mentioned Molly Pickford to her Rossi thought. The person who had saved her life was now missing and had possibly been killed along with Rick Cassidy. “It’s true, Sana. You were right. I can still hardly believe it. I can understand why you didn’t tell anyone else but you didn’t try to ask them about it?”

Oksana Belenko shook her head, “When I first figured it out neither one of them knew me at all. They had no reason to trust me yet and I didn’t want them to worry that I would tell someone.
